Types of editing services:
Developmental Editing:
Developmental editing includes writing, rewriting and editing of the manuscript
provided by the author/client such that the original purpose and the author's
intent will be adhered to or enhanced. It often includes:

Creating a manuscript on the basis of content and research supplied by an
author.

Rewriting and making suggestions about content, organization, presentation,
grammar, word usage

Substantive Editing:
Substantive editing includes writing or rewriting segments of text to
improve the manuscript in some or all of the following ways:
- Clarifying and/or reorganizing a manuscript for content, structure, meaning
- Eliminating jargon, smoothing language, improving readability and flow of information
- Reorganizing paragraphs, sections, or chapters to improve the
order in which the text is presented
- Revising any or all aspects of the text
to improve its presentation
- Creating or recasting tables and/or figures
Copyediting:
Copyediting or line editing includes any or all of the following:
- Correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word usage while preserving the meaning and voice of the original text
- Checking for or imposing a consistent style and format
- Reading for overall clarity and sense
- Checking for and pointing out apparent errors or inconsistencies of mechanics and of facts
- Highlighting permissions needed to publish copyrighted material
- Cross-checking references, art, figures, tables, equations, and other features for consistency with their mentions in the text
- Writing or editing captions and/or credit lines
- Preparing a manuscript for the next stage of the publication process
Proofreading:
Proofreading compares the latest stage of text with the preceding stage, marking discrepancies in text, and, when appropriate, checking for problems in page makeup, layout, or type. Proofreading may also include one or more of the following:
- Checking proof against typesetting specifications
- Pointing out errors or inconsistencies that may have escaped an editor or writer
- Line-break hyphenation
- Page breaks
- Figures and tables
- Text footnotes
